RYA Youth courses

The RYA Youth Sailing scheme is usually completed in small dinghies suitable for the size of the sailor, but courses can also be completed in keelboats and multihulls. Our expert instructors offer a safe environment for children to have fun, learn and challenge themselves.

 

Youth Sailing Scheme – Start Sailing Stage 1 (2days/16hours) 

An introduction to the parts of the boat and the basic principles of how to get a boat sailing

Launching and recovery, sailing across the wind, turning around, steering and basic parts of the boat

Able to sail across the wind, steer and understand the basic principles of sailing

 

Youth Sailing Scheme – Start Sailing Stage 2 (2days/16hours) 

Develop the skills needed to sail around a course and understand the basic principles needed to become a confident sailor

Improved sailing skills on all points of sail. Tacking, gybing, ropework and collision avoidance

Building confidence sailing, tacking, gybing and improving boat control and speed

 

Youth Sailing Scheme – Start Sailing Stage 3 (2days/16hours) 

Build your confidence and develop the skills needed to sail in different directions in moderate conditions

Improved rigging, sailing theory, launching and recovery. Building confidence in a range of sailing techniques on all points of sail and capsize recovery

Able to launch and sail a dinghy on all points of sail or around a triangle in moderate conditions.

 

Youth Sailing Scheme – Start Sailing Stage 4 (2days/16hours) 

Learn how to sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm and solve a variety of problems afloat

Transferring pre-learnt skills, techniques and manoeuvres to sail crewed boats, enhance rigging, launching, recovery and practical skills to recover a man overboard.

Can sail a double-handed boat on all points of sail. Launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring in moderate conditions.

 

Level 1 Start Powerboating (1day/8hours)

Provides a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. It covers boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.

The course may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement, and the certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

A one day introduction to Powerboating with no previous experience required.
