The certificates within the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme are a significant achievement. Instructors sign off each skill as you complete it and once completed your certificate can be of use in other areas of your study or activities such as PE at school, or the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

This RYA Youth Stage 1 course will give you a basic understanding of how a boat sails, with some experience of steering and handling the boat. It covers launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat, and basic sailing. After the course you will be able to steer and understand basic principles of sailing.

Please note: two days is the minimum time required to complete the course. The actual time required depends on ability and weather conditions on the day. A certificate will only be issued if you have demonstrated the ability to complete the syllabus in appropriate weather conditions.  Our after-school and holiday clubs provide the perfect opportunity to fine-tune your skills.

What to bring with you

  • Please wear old clothes as you may get wet
  • A change of clothes/ Towel
  • Swimwear to wear under a wetsuit
  • Appropriate footwear: non -slip, closed toe shoes or trainers that you don’t mind getting wet
  • Warm/ waterproof clothing, including hat and gloves if the weather is cold, wet or windy.
  • Sun cream/sunhat if the weather is sunny and hot
  • A packed lunch if you are on an all-day course or activity
