This two-day Safety Boat course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities.

This course focuses on:

  • Preparation and boat handling
  • Rescue techniques (dinghy rescue, windsurfer rescue, kayak or canoe rescue. These will be covered in theory and practically)
  • Rescuing other water users
  • Race management and mark laying
  • End-of-day procedures
  • Safety, including suitability of craft, local factors and communication

On completion of this course you will understand how to deliver safety or support cover to a range of craft, recovery techniques and the ability to provide safety cover in a racing or training environment.

Please note: two days is the minimum time required to complete the course. The actual time required depends on ability and weather conditions on the day. A certificate will only be issued if you have demonstrated the ability to complete the syllabus in appropriate weather conditions. If needed, please speak to the office about organising an extra session to complete the course.

Topics covered on the course include:

  • Preparation: safety equipment, assistance with race management
  • Boat Handling and Manoeuvres: positioning in respect to fleet, standing off another craft, coming alongside under way, dinghy and windsurfer rescue, towing, mark laying, Man-over-board
  • Theory and Background: rescue of other water users, communication.

Please note:

2 days is the minimum time required to complete the course.  The actual time required depends on ability and weather conditions on the day.  A certificate will only be issued if you have demonstrated the ability to complete all of the syllabus in appropriate weather conditions.  If needed, please speak to the office about organising an extra session to complete the course.

What to bring with you

  • Please wear old clothes as you may get wet
  • A change of clothes/ Towel
  • Swimwear to wear under a wetsuit
  • Appropriate footwear: non -slip, closed toe shoes or trainers that you don’t mind getting wet
  • Warm/ waterproof clothing, including hat and gloves if the weather is cold, wet or windy.
  • Sun cream/sunhat if the weather is sunny and hot
  • A packed lunch if you are on an all-day course or activity
