Saturday mornings is when we hold our Junior Race Squad training. Some sessions will be cold as we operate during the winter and adjust what we do to the weather we have.
We are always looking for ways to develop talent here at All-Aboard and allow people to see the potential of their talent in National or even World sailing. And yes, this does actually happen!
The aim of this session is to develop the skills of our youth sailors into the world of competitive racing. Typically, a young person will progress to our Junior Race Squad from our After-School clubs. These sessions are particularly aimed at those who want to improve as a sailor or have been recommended by their instructor.
We look at the skills you have and coach you to improve all of your skills. We do this in fun sessions of skill practice and loads of short races. Be prepared to be told how to improve, be prepared to try hard and get praise when you show improvement. You will learn about boat speed, tactics, crewing and helming skills.
Taking part in these sessions will allow you to develop personal goals and you will be supported to progress your sailing ability, boat speed and tactics. Taking part in such training would prepare you for NSSA events, youth, fleet and handicap racing.
There are many ways to develop sailing skills. In recent years we have had the following successes:
- 6 participants in World Championships, four people in National Squads, and a few more in Regional squads.
- 12 people have become RYA Dinghy Instructors. Some of those have become Senior Instructors.
- 2 have become Sailing Captain at their university.
- 12 more have become Assistant Instructors at the Centre.
…and all of them have had a lot of FUN!
*If you are interested in joining us, please contact the admin team at the centre and tell them of your interest in Race Squad. The squad coaching team will then get back in touch and also speak to your instructor. You will be invited to attend a Saturday morning session for an informal trial and then if you are suitable, you will be invited back for regular sessions.
All-Aboard is a fully inclusive watersports charity that welcomes everyone. Our activity centre and our entire activity programme is designed with accessibility at its core.
